Environments full of natural charm —and highly recommended— to discover outdoor education

There are places you don’t just visit, you experience. National Geographic knows this well and highlights two such locations as essential to discovering the best of Tarragona: Prades, in the heart of the mountains, and Altafulla, nestled along the Mediterranean and just steps away from Finca Tamarit. At Edulònia, we’ve chosen these landscapes as the setting for our school camps and family tourism programmes because we know that when a place resonates, learning flows.
According to the National Geographic article, these two environments are among the 11 most charming and recommended villages in Tarragona, thanks to their scenic beauty, authenticity and cultural richness. And we’re not surprised: they breathe calm, history and nature.
Education doesn’t just happen in classrooms. A forest walk or a morning exploring the coast can be more revealing than any textbook. It is in these spaces —authentic, beautiful and vibrant— where children and young people develop emotional, social and environmental skills that last a lifetime.

Prades: silence, nature and stars
Prades is one of those villages that captivates you at first sight and transforms you gradually. With its iconic red stone, surrounding forests, and a clear night sky filled with stars, it offers a privileged setting for educational development.
As National Geographic puts it, it is “one of the most photogenic villages in inland Tarragona.” But its beauty is not only visual: it is also an unparalleled pedagogical environment. At our Finca Prades, children and young people can practice orienteering, take part in sustainability workshops, observe constellations and join cooperative activities that foster respect, patience and curiosity.
This setting is ideal for boosting ecological awareness and connection with the natural world. Here, listening to birdsong, identifying native plants, or understanding how an ecosystem works becomes a meaningful part of the educational experience.
Tamarit: sea and history next to Altafulla
Just a few minutes from Altafulla —and an extension of its landscape— lies Tamarit, a coastal gem crowned by its iconic medieval castle. While National Geographic refers to Altafulla as one of the most charming villages along the Tarragona coast, it’s worth noting that Tamarit is its immediate neighbour and shares the same natural and historical setting, with a truly captivating atmosphere.
Our Finca Tamarit, located in this exceptional area, offers a unique educational experience: school camps and activities that combine sea, nature and heritage. The Camí de Ronda trail, wild beaches, marine life and the historical imprint of the castle allow for truly memorable experiences. Here, every excursion is a story, every workshop a discovery. Children learn, collaborate, have fun and discover themselves while immersed in nature and culture in a safe and exciting environment.

Education with roots and horizons
At Edulònia, we believe the environment is a key educational agent. When children step out of the classroom and into landscapes like those of Prades or Tamarit, they awaken a genuine interest in understanding the world. It’s not just about acquiring knowledge —it’s about living experiences that teach them to observe, respect, reflect and feel.
This type of education —active, emotional and meaningful— helps shape individuals who are more engaged, more empathetic and more connected to their surroundings. And it happens naturally, almost without them noticing.

A commitment to experiential pedagogy
Our school camps follow a pedagogical approach based on learning by doing. This means every activity is designed for children to develop skills and values through hands-on experiences like workshops, games, trails and group challenges.
Everything takes place in a shared environment where autonomy, responsibility and cooperation are promoted. Because we know that learning to live together is also part of life’s curriculum.
At Edulònia, we also have two additional properties that share this same educational philosophy and privileged setting: Finca La Capella, surrounded by nature near the Montsant mountains, and Vallclara, nestled in the heart of the Prades Mountains. Both are ideal spaces to enjoy school camps and educational activities in direct contact with nature, within a safe, welcoming and enriching atmosphere.

When a place inspires, education transforms
These natural environments are not just postcard landscapes. They are open-air classrooms, opportunities to educate from the heart of nature and through the power of experience. The fact that National Geographic speaks of these places proves their value. That we use them to educate is a commitment to a more conscious and connected future.
